Webwasher 6.8.4 Memory enhancements 11 Years, 3 Months ago Karma: 2
With the release of 6.8.4 and 5 of the Webwasher software there is a new architecture in place allowing for a
larger memory model to be utilized.

The process architecture of what the Webwasher product did originally was kept in a single process for
connection tracking, scanning, malware etc.

Part of this processing being on a 32 bit architecture wouldn't allow for memory greater than 4gb to be utilized in a single process.
Address limitations of what 32 bits can represent. This is why by default the units only shipped with a max of
4gb of memory installed.

Being still constrained by a 32 bit physical limit of the OS being used, the Webwasher process tree was broken up
to spawn multiple process that communicate internally now, as of 6.8.4.

What this means is that if you have an existing Webwasher unit, and you can run on version 6.8.4 or greater, then increasing the
amount of memory physically in the box will give you benefits. Not necessarily greater throughput, but connection processing
will be decreased and site analysis of a destination site will happen more smoothly. ICAP communications as well will be improved
if being utilized.

This is not a necessity, but in a heavily loaded environment this enhancement will help.

Since the units are actually a DELL server - rebranded as a Secure Computing / McAfee appliance - be sure to use
only genuine DELL memory to avoid any warranty / support issues. In most cases, depending on the model you have
there are open slots so it's additive. Definitely check your appliance in advance to be sure.
This product is eligible for customers to upgrade on their own, as long as only OEM memory is used.

I've attached McAfee document describing models and open slots that will give a more detailed description of
what and how to do an upgrade.

Again, hope this information helps!

Responding to previous article, file attachment didn't work. Here's some of the content that is important:

lncreased memory requirements
With version 6.8.4 of McAfee Web Gateway, multi-process configuration was introduced for the McAfee Web
Gateway high-end appliances as a new option to improve overall performance of these appliances.
This new option is best used with 8 GB RAM, however, the current models of the high-end appliance
hardware ship with only 4 GB RAM or less. So if you want to make use of the new option, it is recommended
that you add memory to your appliance.
The following models are here referred to as high-end appliances:
• McAfee Web Gateway 1900 A, B, C, D
• McAfee Web Gateway 2900 all
Each of these models provides 8 DIMM slots, which are currently occupied as follows:
• McAfee Web Gateway 1900 A — 2 GB memory (4 x 512 KB, 667 MHz), Single Rank, four open DIMM
slots
• McAfee Web Gateway 1900 B — 4 GB memory (8 x 512 KB, 667 MHz), Single Rank, all DIMM slots
occupied
• McAfee Web Gateway 1900 C/D — 4 GB memory (4 x 1 MB, 667 MHz), Dual or Single Rank, four open
DIMM slots
• McAfee Web Gateway 2900 all — 4 GB memory (4 x 1 MB, 667 MHz), Dual or Single Rank, four open
DIMM slots
For the McAfee Web Gateway 1900 A and B models, it is recommended that you remove the existing 512
KB memory modules and insert new modules instead to reach the total of 8 GB RAM.
For the 1900 C and D models, as well as for all 2900 models, insert additional modules in the free slots to
reach the total of 8 GB RAM.
Note: Best performance is achieved when four or all eight DIMM slots are occupied. Therefore you should insert
modules as follows when upgrading: 8 x 1 GB or 4 x 2 GB, or 4 x 1 GB, respectively.
Buying additional memory modules
To add memory to your appliance, it is important that you buy only Dell-certified memory modules, which
can be obtained from the Dell online store. Proceed as follows:
1 Go to www.dell.com
2 In the top menu bar of the page then appearing, move your mouse pointer over For Large Enterprise,
and from the drop-down list that is then displayed, select Servers, Storage and Networking.
3 In the navigation area on the left side of the page then appearing, select Parts & Upgrades for Dell.
4 On the page then appearing, select Memory Selector.
5 From the vendor list on the page then appearing, select Dell, and on the subsequent page, select
PowerEdge Servers.
6 To buy memory modules for any version of the McAfee Web Gateway 1900 appliance model, select
PowerEdge 1950 from the list of models on the page then appearing. For McAfee Web Gateway 2900,
select PowerEdge 2950.
7 On the page then appearing, choose the modules required for upgrading memory on your appliance, and
complete the purchasing procedure in the usual way.
